Atlantech Online Network Now IPv6 Enabled

IPv6 is the next generation of the Internet Protocol, which is the foundation on which the internet of today is built. IPv4, the current and most widely used version of IP, will be in use for many years to come. However, IPv4 resources are starting to show signs of becoming scarce as the popularity of the internet has continued its rapid growth over the past ten years. Compound this with the fact that as the pool of available IPv4 addresses shrinks, the growth of the internet routing table grows. This is where IPv6 comes in.

IPv6 offers a much larger pool of addresses for the IP-enabled world to use, as well as many other features not easily implemented on the internet today, such as mobile IP and built-in quality of service. Atlantech Online has been issued a /32 network from the American Registry of Internet Numbers (ARIN), which is a network with trillions of available IP addresses. In addition to the astronomical amount of available address space, the IPv6 hierarchical address structure was constructed in such a manner that internet routing tables should grow at a much slower rate, affecting core routers in a less serious manner.

In 2005, the Executive Office of E-Government and Information Technology mandated that by June 2008, all government agency backbones must use IPv6. As that date nears, IPv6-enabled network service providers like Atlantech Online will be in a position to service those agencies. By offering IPv6, Atlantech Online continues to expand its service profile and positions the communications provider strategically at the forefront of technology.
